Lidl employees are given control over their own development
Full online support with the Totara Learning Management System
Lidl’s goal is to support employees in their personal development with digital resources on one learning platform. In order to realise this, Lidl implemented the LMS, Totara Learn. Within the LMS, employees are offered a ‘compulsory’ and a ‘free’ online training programme.
“With Totara Learn there is a solid foundation. The next steps are to design and organise blended learning programmes including content creation. Leadership development and the safeguarding of our leadership principles is the next topic that we will shape according to the new concept.”
Lidl’s key question when overhauling their learning programme was: “How can we support our employees during their career at Lidl with smart tools in their needs for work and personal development?”. Sophie Geerts Jaspers, Director of HR, Lidl The Netherlands has a clear vision on this. It was her wish to give employees more space and responsibility in their personal development.
Their concept was to create a personal online curriculum for each learner. Lidl supports employees in their personal development with one online platform. The performance cycle provides insight into the strengths and development points of their employees. This forms the basis for everyone’s personal online curriculum. Then learners can work on their personal development at their own pace through a large choice of learning resources.
“At Lidl we work goal-oriented and result-oriented. This means that we want to make quick progress and in this we found a good partner in UP learning. As a result, we have created a fully fledged and attractive learning environment in less than 3 months, with which employees can improve the quality of their work and take control of it themselves.”
Lidl wants to make self-directed learning more attractive to employees. In addition, HR and L&D wanted to improve efficiency by registering, reporting and evaluating everyone within one system. Lidl therefore opted for the learning management system (LMS) Totara Learn from Totara Partner UP learning. The learning environment is visually clear and attractive; learners’ progress is clear and they have a clear overview of their development path. All this encourages employees to get started with their own development, and it is easier for the manager to monitor individual development and offer more targeted support.
Together with Lidl, UP learning filled the LMS with its own resources and specific content from the Premium Learning Library. Employees can choose from workshops, hundreds of e-learning resources and 800 ebooks, ranging from management books and personal development training to very practical topics such as Excel or learning to present in front of an audience.
Within three months Lidl made the change to a fully digitally supported development process for their employees. The implementation met the required quality and safety within an unprecedented short time, which has been recognised internationally.
Within three months Lidl made the change to a fully digitally supported development process for their employees. To fully implement this in this unprecedented short time and to meet the required quality and safety, has also been noticed internationally. Lidl competes with this case for the Totara awards: ‘Best Retail’ and ‘Best use of Totara for Extended Enterprise’.
The extensive and challenging learning offer is anyplace, anytime, any device approachable. Because Lidl attaches great importance to compliance with the AVG legislation and the safety of the IT landscape, a great deal of attention has been paid to this during the implementation. A very strict PEN test ** has been carried out, which guarantees the safety of Lidl users. And logging into the learning environment is optimized via a so-called ‘two-factor authentication’, where you double-check on someone’s identity. Lidl leaves nothing to chance.

* The Premium Learning Library is the largest online training library worldwide that UP opens in collaboration with CrossKnowledge. Organizations choose from this what they need to develop their employees on themes such as: customer orientation, communication, innovation, coaching, personal effectiveness, leadership, sales, finance, HR, and so on. The library contains e-Learning, (interactive) video, infographics, essentials, self-tests and ‘team sessions’. By combining the Learning Library with its own content and making company-specific learning paths, it is seamlessly connected to the learning needs of employees and the organization.
